Other Site Characteristics

Modesta area collinare con substrato costituito da depositi lacustri villafranchiani ricoperta quasi totalmente da fustaie di Quercus cerris con Quercus frainetto e Quercus petraea. Nel sottobosco si associano sclerofille sempreverdi con elementi caducifogli collinari che, nell'insieme, avvicinano questi boschi a quelli del Teucrio siculi-Quercion cerridis.

4.2 Quality and importance

Il sito comprende boschi a Quercus frainetto posti in corrispondenza del limite nord-orientale di distribuzione nella penisola italiana, e perciò di grande valore fitogeografico. Notevole è anche l'importanza floristica per la presenza, oltre alle endemiche, di specie: rare a livello nazionale (Tuberaria lignosa); rare a livello regionale (Malus florentina) e di particolare interesse fitogeografico (Calluna vulgaris). Per la fauna si segnala anche Buteo buteo (specie poco comune).
