Other Site Characteristics

Modesto rilievo calcareo dove, oltre agli habitat segnalati con codice ed attribuiti all'ordine Prunetalia spinosae (5130) ed all'associazioni Asperulo purpureae-Brometum erecti e Brizo mediae-Brometum erecti (6210), sono presenti boschi di Fagus sylvatica, inquadrabili nell'associazione Polysticho-Fagetum.Caratteristiche sono le piccole aree semirupestri con Euphorbia spinosa.

4.2 Quality and importance

Ottimo esempio di area montana appenninica con faggete (a nuclei governate a fustaia) e pascoli a Bromus erectus ben conservati e ricche di specie. Di particolare interesse fitogeografico sono, inoltre, i cespuglieti a Euphorbia spinosa, che ricoprono le creste esposte a sud. Questo tipo di vegetazione è molto raro nell'Appennino centrale, tanto che in Umbria essa è conosciuta solo per poche stazioni (quella di M. Maggio è la più interna). Tra le specie floristiche, oltre alle endemiche, è stata segnalata Ephedra major, relitto conservativo del Terziario. Tra la fauna è stato segnalato Accipiter nisus (raro), Buteo buteo e Falco tinnunculus (specie poco comuni) e Lepus europaeus (fondamentale per la catena alimentare dell'aquila reale).
