Other Site Characteristics

Versante, molto acclive, esposto a nord, che dalla cima di Poggio Pantano scende fino alle sponde del Torrente Sentino. L'area è quasi interamente ricoperta da boschi di carpino nero (Ostrya carpinifolia), dell'associazione Scutellario-Ostryetum, che sono interrotti, nei settori superiori, da piccole aree pascolative a bromo (Bromus erectus) e da modesti affioramenti rocciosi; il settore inferiore del bosco si contraddistingue per la folta presenza di esemplari alto-arbustivi di alloro (Laurus nobilis) e di bosso (Buxus sempervirens). Le sponde del Fiume Sentino sono poi interessate dalla vegetazione igrofila ripariale a salice bianco (Salix alba) ed ontano nero (Alnus glutinosa). Le specie Buxus sempervirens e Laurus nobilis rappresentano due entità arbustive di particolare interesse fitogeografico per il territorio regionale umbro.

4.2 Quality and importance

Importante stazione naturale di alloro (Laurus nobilis) e di bosso (Buxus sempervirens), due specie sempreverdi considerate "relitti xerotermici", che in Italia vivono spontaneamente solo in alcune regioni e per lo più in stazioni puntiformi; questa stazione, inoltre, riveste grande importanza essendo, in tutto il territorio regionale, l'unica dove le due specie convivono assieme. La stazione di alloro poi, è una delle pochissime naturali in Umbria, poichè nelle altre località boschive la specie è per lo più spontaneizzata o inselvatichita.
