Other Site Characteristics

Altopiano montuoso di origine carsico-tettonica, esteso ad una quota di circa 940 m e circondato da versanti interamente ricoperti di boschi, che appartengono a rilievi calcarei le cui cime oltrepassano di poco i 1000 m di altitudine. La parte pianeggiante più bassa è interessata da praterie mesofile secondarie a dominanza di covetta dei prati (Cynosurus cristatus), inquadrabili nell'alleanza Cynosurion cristati; mentre al bordo della conca si sviluppano praterie semimesofile a bromo (Bromus erectus), dell'alleanza Phleo ambigui-Bromion erecti. I boschi, invece, sono costituiti per la massima parte da fustaie mesofile a cerro (Quercus cerris), con presenza sporadica di agrifoglio (Ilex aquifolium), dell'associazione Carici sylvaticae-Quercetum cerridis, cui si alternano lembi di faggeta, dell'alleanza Geranio nodosi-Fagion, e di orno-ostrieto, dell'associazione Scutellario-Ostryetum carpinifoliae.

4.2 Quality and importance

Area montana con boschi e pascoli in ottimo stato di conservazione e particolarmente rappresentativi della vegetazione acidofila su paleosuoli fersiallitici presente nell'Appennino umbro-marchigiano in corrispondenza dei principali bacini carsico-tettonici. Le cerrete del Carici sylvaticae-Quercetum cerridis, in particolare, sono formazioni poco comuni e descritte proprio per questo settore appenninico di cui costituiscono una delle principali emergenze vegetazionali. L'area, inoltre, è molto significativa per l'aspetto paesaggistico, nonchè per il corteggio floristico ricco sia di specie prative e di sottobosco che rivestono grande importanza bio-ecologica.
