Other Site Characteristics

Balza di travertino incisa dal salto del Fiume Velino e lambita, alla base, dal Fiume Nera. Oltre agli habitat segnalati con codice ed attribuiti al Cratoneurion (7220), al Salicion albae (92A0), all'Alno-Ulmion (91E0) ed al Cephalanthero-Quercetum ilicis (9340), sono presenti boschi ad Ostrya carpinifolia dell'associazione Scutellario-Ostryetum e, nelle aree stilicidiose, aggruppamenti ad Adianthus capillus-veneris dell'ordine Adiantetalia.

4.2 Quality and importance

Il sito, oltre al grande valore paesaggistico dovuto alla famosa Cascata delle Marmore, le cui acque precipitano tra pareti rocciose e boschi per circa 160 m, assume un grande valore geobotanico per la presenza della più importante area con vegetazione pietrificante (Cratoneurion) dell'Italia centrale. Tutto lo sbarramento roccioso (una parete di circa 160-180 m di altezza e 400-500 di lunghezza), a cui si deve l'origine della cascata, è infatti composto da travertino, la cui deposizione è in buona parte ancora attiva.
