Lago appartenente al complesso idrografico dell'antico Lago Velino, originato dallo sbarramento di travertino depositato dal Fiume Velino prima di confluire nel Fiume Nera, e poi in gran parte prosciugato artificialmente. La vegetazione del Lago di Piediluco si contraddistingue oltre che per gli habitat segnalati con codice, e corrispondenti a: formazioni algali del genere Chara, aggruppamenti a Lemna minor, Potamogeton natans e Nuphar luteum (3150), formazioni con Scirpus lacustris (6420) ed aggruppamenti a Cladium mariscus (7210), anche per le cenosi idrofitiche a Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia dell'alleanza Phragmition australis, per la presenza di cariceti del Caricion gracilis, nonchè per la presenza di agallati con vegetazione del Mentho aquaticae-Caricetum pseudocyperi. Il Monte Caperno, invece, è quasi interamente ricoperto da boschi del Quercion ilicis (9340) e da formazioni a Buxus sempervirens (5110). Si segnala l'accertata estinzione del Rutilus rubilio.

4.2 Quality and importance

Lago naturale con significativi esempi, per composizione floristica e stato di conservazione, di vegetazione elofitica, idrofitica e dei prati umidi. In un braccio del lago tra le elofite è presente l'unica stazione a Claudium mariscus conosciuta per l'Umbria. Tra le specie floristiche sono state segnalate: Hippuris vulgaris, Utricularia vulgaris, Orchis incarnata, Caltha palustris, Nuphar luteum, Carex acutiformis, Carex vesicaria e Iris pseudacorus, rare alivello regionale. Tra la fauna sono stati indicati anche i molluschi Emmericia patula, Islamia cfr. pusilla, Pisidium henslowanum, Pisidium obtusale, Pisidium pseudosphaerium, Pisidium tenuilineatum e Theodoxus fluviatilis (specie rare o poco comuni od in via di progressivo calo), i tricotteri Beraeodes minutus e Erotesis baltica (specie stenotope di sorgenti reo-limno-creniche) e Ceraclea fulva (rara e vincolata ai poriferi di acque dolci), Leuciscus cephalus (specie autoctona), Buteo buteo, Cettia cetti e Falco tinnunculs (specie poco comuni).
