Vasta conca di origine tettonica, situata a m 1396 di quota e compresa fra le pendici del Monte della Croce, Monte Porche e Monte Albuzzago, nel versante orientale del gruppo dei Monti Sibillini; il fondo della conca è occupato da vegetazione prativa, mentre sulle sue pendici si trovano alcuni nuclei di faggeta in parte di alto fusto, anche con esemplari secolari, che raggiungono la quota di 1750 m, una delle più alte che oggi si possono osservare sulla catena dei Monti Sibillini.

Si tratta di un'area chiusa, senza sbocco superficiale delle acque, completamente delimitata da rilievi montuosi, sulle cui pendici è possibile osservare il limite superiore naturale del bosco, che quasi ovunque è stato abbassato dall'uomo con il disboscamento, per ottenere nuove aree pascolive; stato di conservazione molto buono
