Other Site Characteristics

Aste fluviali dell'Aterno e del Sagittario, con numrerosi fossi e alcuni piccoli stagni, a monte di Popoli, con ricca vegetazione acquatica. Nel sito è compreso anche il breve corso del fiume Giardino. L'area sorgentifera di Capo Pescara è la più importante dell'Abruzzo, con decine di polle che formano un limpido specchio lacustre-palustre. Varie sono le comunità di idrofite e di elofite. Il sito per le sue caratteristiche ecologiche viene attribuito alla regione biogeografica mediterranea anche se ricade per il 57% nella regione alpina all'interno dei 7 Km di buffer.

L'elevata eterogeneità ambientale legata all'ambiente fluviale e zone circostanti favorisce la dinamica di molte popolazioni di uccelli. Notevole è la diversità paesaggistica. Valore elevato per la fauna ittica. Altissima è la ricchezza di invertebrati. Importante anche il valore didattico per la rappresentatività di alcuni habitat.
