Pendici collinari su arenarie e argille plioceniche attraversate da corsi d'acqua e caratterizzate da un microclima fresco.

Il sito annovera habitat rappresentativi, soprattutto boschi freschi, carpineti commisti a boschi termofili (leccete), che originano un mosaico di vegetazioni di notevole effetto paesaggistico. Buona la qualità ambientale espressa dalla presenza di talune specie mediterranee relitte, in pericolo di estinzione a livello regionale, solo qui rimaste accantonate (mirto, calicotome, eec.).
