Other Site Characteristics

L'area compresa all'interno del SIC è territorio pianeggiante originariamente occupato dagli espandimenti del torrente Molina le cui alluvioni d'alveo costituiscono il Piano di Sessano. Attualmente l'area è occupata in buona parte da insediamenti industriali in continua e crescente espansione. GEOLOGIA: marne argilloso-cineree e giallastre varvate, sabbie argillose e sabbie giallastre, lenti di ciottoli poligenico in copertura. SUOLI: inceptisuoli humaquepts, fluvaquentic histic. CLIMA: regione temperata, termotipo collinare superiore, ombrotipo umido inferiore.

4.2 Quality and importance

Pianura alluvionale un tempo occupata da acquitrini. Probabilmente i siti di accantonamento di vegetazione acquatica e palustre, rara nel Molise, sono andati distrutti in tempi recentissimi a causa delle opere di bonifica e di sottrazione di territorio. Frequenti sono gli episodi di colonizzazione in atto da parte di una flora meno esigente dal punto di vista idrico che sta soppiantando l'originario assetto di piana alluvionale dove gli impaludamenti e le emersioni della falda idrica arrivavano ad occupare circa il 50% dell'area. Pur con queste caratteristiche negative l'area potrebbe presentare motivo di recupero ambientale grazie alla presenza sporadica di individui di Salix purpurea che sta ad indicare la potenzialità per il recupero da parte di una foresta alluviale a legni morbidi in seguito ad eventuale, anche parziale ripristino del regime idrico originario.
