Other Site Characteristics

Il sito prende il nome da una piccola barra fluviale presente lungo il tratto interamente molisano del fiume Sangro, ma in realtà copre anche il retrostante bosco di Cantalupo, che rappresenta un buon esempio di cerreta mesofila localizzata su pendenze moderate lungo il piano submontano. Dinamicamente collegate a questi boschi ci sono le praterie e i cespuglieti che occupano la restante parte del territorio. Lungo il fiume Sangro sono presenti cenosi igrofile in facies di mosaico, con un'alternanza tra cenosi erbacee ed arboree. GEOLOGIA: arenarie micacee grigio - giallastre, a volte fogliettate, alternate ad argille siltose plumbee o subordinatamente a calcari marnosi chiari. SUOLI: inceptisuoli, vistochrepts, inceptisuoli xerochrepts, mollisuoli calcixerolls. CLIMA: regione temperata termotipo montano superiore, ombrotipo umido superiore.

4.2 Quality and importance

La tipicità del sito risiede nell'essere un'isola fluviale del fiume Sangro. Notevolmente interessanti ed integri sono i boschi ripariali di varie specie di salici ed ontani. E' inoltre presente una abbondante vegetazione riparia e fluviale di sottobosco ed una radura a pascolo. Nell'ambiente acquatico si nota una presenza di fauna tipica e non è da escludersi la frequentazione del sito da parte di qualche esemplare di Lutra lutra.
