Il sito risulta costituito da un'estesa formazione boschiva a Quercus cerris e Quercus pubescens in cui talvolta compaiono elementi tipici della biocora a carattere mediterraneo (Phillyrea latifolia, Acer monspessulanum). Il sito ingloba l'intero abitato di Castropignano. GEOLOGIA: argille, argillo scisti e marno scisti rossi e verdi. SUOLI: mollisuoli haploxerolls lithic. CLIMA: regione temperata termotipo collinare superiore, ombrotipo subumido superiore.

4.2 Quality and importance

La qualità ambientale non è elevata per l'eccessiva antropizzazione, ma l'importanza del sito deriva dall'ampia diversificazione degli habitat (rupi, boschi, sorgenti) che ne renderebbe necessario il ripristino e la tutela. Richezza di specie dell'avifauna. I boschi dell'habitat 91M0 hanno nel complesso uno stato di conservazione abbastanza soddisfacente. Si notato delle discontinuità della struttura dovute probabilmente a tipi di gestione forestale differenti. In alcuni casi si denota un'eccessiva penetrazione di elementi di praterie di contatto con conseguente banalizzazione della compagine di flora nemorale.
