Other Site Characteristics

La quasi totalità del territorio del SIC è occupata da aree a destinazione agricola. Nonostante il sito sia strettamente addossato al fiume Fortore, i boschi a prevalenza di specie igrofile sono ormai relegati ad ambiti ristretti ed esigui. Di estensione maggiore risultano i cespuglieti a prevalenza di Tamarix diffusi nelle prossimità dell'alveo del fiume, mentre i cespuglieti a sclerofille sempreverdi, riconducibili a formazioni di macchia, sono dislocati su versanti erosi ed acclivi. Presenti anche dei rimboschimenti risalenti ad una decina di anni fa a prevalenza di Populus nigra. Clima: Termotipo mesomediterraneo medio, Ombrotipo subumido inferiore. Geologia: Ghiaia, sabbia ed argille dei fondovalle attuali. Calcari bianchi organogeni che si succedono nella parte media a marne calcaree talvolta con lenti di selce, e nella parte inferiore ad arenarie quarzose giallastre.

4.2 Quality and importance

Formazioni vegetali fortemente degradate, ma di notevole importanza in quanto rappresentano gli ultimi lembi relittuali di vegetazioni ripari e macchia mediterranea ancora presenti lungo il fiume del Fortore. L'habitat 92A0 si presenta in mediocre stato di conservazione sia nel suo assetto floristico che in quello strutturale. Ciò è dovuto in gran parte alla presenza di un'alveo cementificato che in questo tratto del fiume, di fatto mortifica la naturale spensione e zonazione delle cenosi igrofile e ripariali. Le aree golenali, come conseguenza della riduzione delle portate del fiume, sono attualmente occupate per ampi tratti da una fitta vegetazione elofitica invasiva a Phragmites australis in cui si sviluppa un pascolo bovino ed equino a carattere occasionale. Potenzialità per lo stagionamento di un gran numero di specie di ornitofauna.
