Importante corso fluviale situato, a nord, tra il versante sud-occidentale del Matese ed il complesso del Roccamonfina e del Monte Maggiore. Riceve le acque del Calore Beneventano; la parte terminale del fiume scorre su terreni prevalentemente argillosi limosi.
