Il sito è caratterizzato da una serie di bacini costieri retrodunali di natura salmastra funzionanti a marea e originatesi per fenomeni di sollevamento del fondale marino.

Nell'area sono presenti alcuni stagni costieri retrodunali con vegetazione alofila inquadrata in tipologie considerate habitat prioritari come le steppe salate e la vegetazione lagunare. Il braccio di mare antistante ospita una ricca prateria di posidonia.
