Other Site Characteristics

Lunga valle fluviale incassata che si apre verso la foce a formare un'ampia area alluvionale. E il più lungo corso fluviale del versante tirrenico calabrese ed attraversa una zona molto suggestiva dei Monti di Orsomarso con cime che sfiorano i 2000 m di altezza con pareti rocciose dentellate e dolomitiche. La valle del Lao si sviluppa in direzione N-S nel settore dellalta valle per poi cambiare direzione verso SW nel tratto di bassa valle prossimo alla foce. Le caratteristiche morfologiche della valle cambiano procedendo dallalta valle fino alla foce. Nel settore iniziale la valle infatti si presenta stretta e con profonde incisioni per diventare ampia e con abbondanti depositi alluvionali nel settore terminale verso la foce. Larea è ricca di grotte fra le quali la Grotta del Romito, con resti di insediamenti umani di 15.000 anni a. C. La grotta è ricca di concrezioni calcaree con stalattiti e stalagmiti, varie incisioni di animali preistorici su roccia e alcuni resti di sepolture di età paleolitica. La vegetazione forestale è caratterizzata da leccete e boschi ripariali a salici e ontani. Il tratto terminale del fiume è caratterizzato da vegetazione ripariale arborea, vegetazione igrofila erbaceo-arbustiva e greto fluviale privo di vegetazione. Le aree limitrofe sono in gran parte coltivate.
