Other Site Characteristics

Il sito si estende sui fondali marini in prossimità della costa jonica calabrese (tra Crosia e Cariati) caratterizzati da estese preterie di Posidonia oceanica in buono stato di conservazione. Si tratta di fondali poco profondi per lunghe distanze dalla costa caratterizzati da sedimenti sabbiosi e siltosi sottoposti allazione meccanica operata dalle correnti litoranee e dal moto ondoso. La costa retrostante è caratterizzata da spiagge con allineamenti di dune moderatamente conservate che delimitano piccoli ambienti umidi. Le spiagge sono alimentate da grandi sistemi fluviali come il Nicà ed il Trionto ed altri sistemi minori che erodono un basamento costituito da rocce metamorfiche ed intrusive ricoperto da una spessa successione sedimentaria di conglomerati, sabbie, argille, calcari e gessi evaporitici.

Ampio sito di Posidonia climax, ad alta biodiversità, importante nursery per pesci anche di interesse economico e per la salvaguardia delle coste dall'erosione.
