Other Site Characteristics

Sito caratterizzato da intensa erosione che determina la tipica morfologia calanchiva. Larea di Maro Simone è particolarmente nota per il caratteristico paesaggio calanchivo. In questarea, che si estende verso NW rispetto al centro abitato di Melito di Porto Salvo, affiorano argille che sono tipicamente impermeabili e soggette ad intensi processi erosivi. I calanchi sono forme di erosione tipiche delle argille e sono caratterizzate dalla suggestiva alternanza fitta di aguzze creste e profonde incisioni proprio per gli intensi processi erosivi che interessano questi sedimenti. Queste morfologie sono tipicamente colonizzate da una vegetazione steppica specializzata a Lygeum spartum. Larea dal punto di vista bioclimatico appartiene alla fascia termomediterranea della regione mediterranea, con regime oceanico stagionale.

4.2 Quality and importance

La particolare morfologia dei calanchi argillosi conferisce al sito una notevole importanza a livello paesaggistico. La vegetazione substeppica a terofite e graminacee perenni e' ben rappresentata ed ospitano una flora steppica assente nel resto d'Italia. I calanchi e i pendii argillosi sono tipicamente colonizzati da una vegetazione steppica specializzata a Lygeum spartum inquadrata nei Lygeo-Stipetea. La formazione a calanchi è prevalentemente concentrata lungo i pendii esposti a Sud.
