Other Site Characteristics

Sistema collinare submontano occupato da sugherete e da aspetti di degradazione dinamicamente collegati Il sito si estende a monte del bacino idrografico della Fiumara Santa Trara. Il reticolo idrografico é strettamente influenzato da un complesso sistema di faglie e fratture connesso al rapido sollevamento dellarea ed in particolare di Campo Piale, tra la fine del Pliocene ed inizio del Pleistocene. In questarea la presenza di un fitto sistema di faglie e fratture rende queste rocce permeabili e poco resistenti allerosione con conseguente sviluppo di fenomeni di dissesto (frane). Il sito appartiene alla regione bioclimatica mediterranea e rientra nella fascia mesomediterranea a regime oceanico stagionale. La copertura prevalentemente forestale, a tratti densa, si alterna a parti scoperte dove emerge il suolo nudo.

4.2 Quality and importance

Area di passo per i rapaci prospicente lo stretto di Messina. Lassociazione vegetale prevalente è lHelleboro-Quercetum suberis: si tratta di un lembo di sughereta abbastanza estesa e a tratti degradata. Accanto alla sughera si insediano il leccio e specie di macchia acidofile, come lerica. La formazione appare chiusa e abbastanza densa.
