Il SIC si estende complessivamente per circa 85 ettari, includendo la fascia dunale compresa fra le contrade Le Macchie (Alcamo) e Sicciarotta (Balestrate), nel cui ambito ricadono anche le foci del Vallone Forgitella e del Torrente Calatubo (o Finocchio). Si tratta di vecchie dune più o meno fissate, dove si conservano interessanti aspetti di vegetazione psammofila, oltre a lembi di macchia a Juniperus turbinata; la zona retrostante la spiaggia è in buona parte ricoperta da rimboschimenti a conifere ed eucalipti. Dal punto di vista geologico, si tratta di depositi marini e continentali, nel cui ambito si sviluppano sabbie quarzose eoliche del Wurmiano-Olocene, oltre a depositi incoerenti a tessitura franco-sabbiosa. Sulla base della classificazione bioclimatica di Rivas-Martinez, l'area rientra nella fascia del termomediterraneo subumido.Nell'area si costituiscono i tipici habitat dell'ambiente dunale ben rappresentate nella fascia costiera della Sicilia meridionale (battigia, zona afitoica, antiduna, dune embrionali, retroduna, ecc.), ma assai rare nella parte nord del territorio regionale. All'interno del biotopo si possono ricontrare frammenti residuali degli aspetti vegetazionali tipici del microgeosigmeto psammofilo, un tempo culminante nella macchia a Juniperus macrocarpa e J. turbinata; la prima delle due ultime entità risulta ormai completamente estinta in quest'area, mentre la seconda è alquanto rara, all'interno del rimboschimento e di aree marginali circostanti.

4.2 Quality and importance

L'area del SIC riveste un'importanza notevole, sia dal punto di vista paesaggistico che biologico-ambientale. Il torrente Calatubo svolge un ruolo importante come rotta di migrazione per gli uccelli soprattutto in autunno. Nel sistema dunale trova spazio un'insieme di comunità vegetali a carattere psammofilo e subalofilo, caratterizzate da entità alquanto specializzate a rare lungo tutto l'arco costiero della Sicilia settentrionale, anche in funzione del disturbo antropico sugli stessi habitat. Di un certo interesse risultano anche i frammenti di macchia residuale a Juniperus turbinata, alcuni dei quali localizzati anche ai margini esterni del sito (come nel caso di alcuni aspetti localizzati presso il Torrente Molinelle, nei pressi di Alcamo Marina), anch'essi meritevoli di tutela. Fra le specie botaniche dell'elenco riportato nella sezione 3.3 figurano alcune entità rare, o ritenute di particolare interesse fitogeografico.
