Other Site Characteristics

L'isolotto appartiene amministrativamente all'omonimo comune di Isola delle Femmine, e rientra fra le riserve naturali orientate previste dalla legge regionale 98/81. Sorge a circa 300 metri dalla costa e rappresenta un'emergenza di calcari mesozoici stratificati, profondamente erosi nel tempo dalla concomitante azione eolica e dall'azione delle mareggiate. L'Isola culmina a 35 m s.l.m., presentando un profilo conico, con la parete a nord assai ripida e la restante parte che degrada lievemente verso la costa. Sulla base della classificazione di RIVAS-MARTINEZ (1994), i caratteri bioclimatici dell'area insulare possono complessivamente riferirsi al termotipo inframediterraneo (temperatura media: > 18 °C), con ombrotipo secco-subumido. Il paesaggio vegetale risulta preminentemente caratterizzato dalla serie della macchia a Lentisco e Palma nana (Pistacio-Chamaeropo humilis sigmetum) oltre al microgeosigmenti localizzati lungo le rupi costiere, preminentemente fisionomizzate dagli aspetti alofitici del Crithmo-Limonion

4.2 Quality and importance

Trattasi di un biotopo di particolare interesse naturalistico, localizzato ai margini di un'area alquanto antropizzata. Il sito è utilizzato da uccelli migratori per soste temporanee. Vi nidifica una colonia di un centinaio di coppie di Gabbiano reale mediterraneo. Le specie riportate nella sezione 3.3 ed indicate con la lettera D fanno riferimento ad entità rare o di interesse fitogeografico.L'isolotto è luogo di sosta per le specie migratrici. L'abbondante colonia di Gabbiani reali, recentemente istauratasi, determina degli approfondimenti per valutarne l'impatto sulla zoocenosi presente.
