Il sito include il tratto fluviale del Fiume Oreto che si sviluppa all'interno della Piana di Palermo, in particolare compreso tra la Contrada Fiumelato di Meccini (Altofonte) e la foce. All'altezza della contrada Pietra Mole, a circa 90 m s.l.m., esso scava un alveo meandriforme, per proseguire poi con andamento più lineare verso l'area urbana di Palermo, fino alla spiaggia di S. Erasmo. Il biotopo si estende per complessivi 155,11 ettari, interessando differenti litotipi (depositi carbonatici di età triassico-eocenica, terreni carbonatici e silico-carbonatici di età Triassico medio-Miocene inferiore, argille brune con livelli di arenarie quarzose dell'Oligocene-Miocene inferiore e calcareniti bioclastiche del Pleistocene inferiore-medio). Seguendo la classificazione bioclimatica proposta da BRULLO et al. (1996), il territorio rientra prevalentemente nel termomediterraneo secco-subumido, con temperatura media compresa tra 17,2 e 18,6 °C e precipitazioni variabili da circa 600 mm della fascia litoranea di Palermo, ad oltre 900 mm delle zone montane più interne. La vegetazione del corso d'acqua è preminentemente caratterizzata da ripisilve a Salix pedicellata e Salix alba (Salicetum albo-pedicellatae) e, più a monte, a Platanus orientalis (Platano-Salicetum pedicellatae), oltre ad aspetti igro-idrofitici alveali ed aspetti boschivi insediati ai margini esterni del corso d'acqua.

4.2 Quality and importance

E' un biotopo di rilevante importanza naturalistico-ambientale in quanto, oltre a costituire un'oasi di rifugio per la fauna, rappresenta un interessante sito per la localizzazione di alcuni aspetti di vegetazione alveo-ripariale. Sono presenti alcune rilevanti entità floristiche, quali ad esempio Petasites fragrans, Laurus nobilis ed Ostrya carpinifolia, ma, soprattutto, Platanus orientalis e Carex panormitana, quest'ultima endemica siculo-sarda a distribuzione molto circoscritta. Nella sezione 3.3 ed indicate con la lettera D, vengono riportate interessanti specie vegetali che in Sicilia risultano alquanto rare e la cui presenza nel territorio è comunque ritenuta di rilevante interesse fitogeografico.
