L'area del SIC ricade nel comune di Serradifalco.Il sito comprende un lago costituitosi nella metà dello scorso secolo a causa di una frana sotterranea naturale, in un'area occupata da una dolina carsica. Il lago ha quindi sostituito l'originario ambiente paludoso che si trovava in corrispondenza della dolina collassata. Il maggiore apporto idrico è attualmente dovuto alle acque reflue del paese di Srerradifalco, che non essendo depurate creano un ambiente ipertrofico, con elevati valori in particolare di fosforo. Il lago è stato classificato come polimittico in relazione alla sua limitata profondità. I valori di conduttività sono elevati in particolare durante l'estate, a causa dell'evaporazione, mentre la composizione ionica appare legata alle caratteristiche geologiche dell'area, in particolare sono riportati alti valori di Ca e Na.Il substrato è riferibile alla formazione evaporitica del Messiniano, dal punto di vista pedologico sono riportati per l'area regosuoli. Bioclima mesomediterraneo medio secco superiore, con piovosità media annua di 561 mm, temperatura media annua di 16° C (Stazione di Caltanissetta). Il lago e le sue adiacenze ospitano vegetazione lacustre anfibia e sommersa, oltre a praticelli effimeri igrofili.

4.2 Quality and importance

La comunità fitoplanctonica è dominata nel periodo più caldo da Euglenophyceae, nel periodo autunnale da Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae, ecc., mentre nel periodo invernale dominano le Charophyceae. La biomassa dovuta a Cyanophyceae viene riportata come molto significativa durante l'estate, in particolare per la presenza di Anabenopsis elenkinii, taxon segnalato per la prima volta in Italia proprio in questo sito. Per quanto riguarda lo zooplankton, sono riportati elevati valori per i cladoceri in inverno, mentre in estate il copepode Euclyclops macruroides domina. Notevoli oscillazioni nella biomassa del fitoplancton sono state osservate nel lago tra l'inverno e la primavera, in relazione al ruolo degli erbivori. Sono anche rappresentate all'interno del sito specie della flora vascolare di interesse fitogeografico (sezione 3.3: D).Il sito ospita consistenti contingenti di specie di uccelli durante le migrazioni. Inoltre è luogo di svernamento di centinaia di anatre ed altre specie acquatiche.
