Other Site Characteristics
Il sito ricade nel comune di Niscemi.Il substrato è riferibile principalmente a sabbie pleistoceniche, oltre che calcareniti ed argille marnose; i suoli sono di natura sabbiosa. Bioclima Mesomediterraneo inferiore secco superiore (stazione di Caltagirone) con precipitazioni medie annue di 552 mm, temperature medie annue 16°C.La vegetazione forestale, descritta come Stipo bromoidis-Quercetum suberis, presenta spiccati caratteri di xericità se confrontata con altre sugherete. La serie legata al disturbo antropico porta dalla sughereta a garighe a Thymus capitatus, Rosmarinus officinalis, Erica multiflora, che possono per ulteriore degrado far posto a comunità erbacee effimere. |
4.2 Quality and importance
La vegetazione forestale presenta uno strato arboreo a dominanza di Quercus suber, a cui si mescolano in alcuni casi ed in dipendenza del substrato Q. ilex e Q. calliprinos, oltre che querce caducifoglie. Questo strato presenta coperture variabili e non è quasi mai continuo, risentendo dell'azione antropica (incendi, pascolo, ecc.), così come lo strato arbustivo, costituito da Daphne gnidium, Cistus salvifolius, C. incanus, Calicotome infesta, Osyris alba, ecc. In queste fitocenosi molto ricco è il contingente di specie erbacee, in particolare graminacee tra le quali molto diffuse sono Ampelodesmos mauritanicus, Stipa bromoides, Oryzopsis miliacea, ecc. La vegetazione è nel complesso molto simile a quella del limitrofo bosco di Santo Pietro. Per quanto riguarda la flora vascolare, nell'area sono presenti alcuni taxa di interesse fitogeografico (inseriti alla sezione 3.3: D).Il sito ospita una zoocenosi molto diversificata comprendente rare specie di mammiferi, uccelli e rettili. |
