Other Site Characteristics

The site covers exclusively the water area of the northern and eastern parts of Curonian Lagoon. Waters of the site freeze in winter, except for the approaches of the seaport, which freeze in the coldest winter periods only. However, rather large breaks of open water form in the lagoon in mild winters or during warm spells in winter. In especially warm winters the entire lagoon stays open for months.

4.2 Quality and importance

The area is important for migratory and wintering waterbirds. The site is particularly valuable as a foraging area for various bird species breeding in the surroundings - Cormorant, White-tailed Eagle and others.
