4.1 General site character

Other Site Characteristics

Marine site belongs to Klaipėda – Ventspils plateau and partly located in the offshore zone (outside territorial waters) of the exposed south-eastern Baltic Sea waters below the photic zone (absence of phytobenthos). Due to greater depths the seabed is relatively less affected by waves compared to the coastal waters.

4.2 Quality and importance

Offshore boulder reefs remain representative site for mussel beds, which got extinct in the coastal waters after the round goby invasion. Dense mussel colonies support high biodiversity of local benthic invertebrate community. Field data suggest strong links between high concentrations of the Long-Tailed ducks (Clangula hyemalis) and distribution of shallow reefs. The sandy slopes adjacent to the reefs support significantly higher densities of Velvet Scoters (Melanitta fusca).
