Other Site Characteristics

Territory of Dzukija National Park was designed in such way that the most typical ecosystems of region would be included ensuring normal continuity of ecosystems functioning. These areas present all variety of ecosystems: coniferous pine forests are dominating in area, especially characteristis forests are dry lichen pine forests on continental dunes. Quite big areas are covered by wet Alnus glutinosa forests, other forest ecosystems as spruce or birch, aspen forests cover small areas. Other also very important ecosystems – meadows and dry open sands cover comparatively small areas in rivers valleys. Water ecosystems are presented in numerous rivers and rivulets (near 36), there are many small wetlands.

4.2 Quality and importance

In the Lithuanian Ecological Network Scheme developed in 2001, largest part of Dzukija NP forests are assigned as core area for biodiversity of European importance. The Nemunas river valley in the Dzukija NP is migratory corridor of European level, valleys of other rivers as Merkys, Ula, Katra are migratory corridors of national and regional importance. Forests, more than 80% of area, are the part of huge forest area covering the territory of Lithuania, Poland and Belarus. Mosaic of small extensively used farmlands creates very valuable open habitats, important to vulnerable and endangered species. It is an important habitat of three species from Habitats directive and other vanishing species. Populations are in good condition and vital.Population with very typical of this species bog is in good condition.Small but vital and quite isolated population of Cypripedium calceolus.Very important spawning places for Aspius population, residing in Kaunas reservoir and in the middle part of the river Nemunas. Favourable residence and spawning places for R.s. amarus. Densities are greater than average.Favourable habitat structure, thus residence and spawning conditions as well. Density is greater than average in Lithuania.High quality habitat with especially favourable residence and spawning conditions. Density is much greater than in other known habitats.
