Other Site Characteristics

The wavy terrain formed by the glacier created a naturally valuable complex of stream, swamps and swamp woodland. The Smalvelė stream flowing through the marsh forests and the peninsulas with dry habitats interacting with marshy areas are distinguished by their special beauty and natural value.

4.2 Quality and importance

Flowing through the 9080 Fennoscandian deciduous swamp woods habitats and swamps, the Smalvele stream is the habitat for Lutra Lutra, while Bombina bombina is heard in the surrounding wetlands. Four eutrophic lakes (3150) provide excellent conditions for the breeding of Leucorrhinia pectoralis, Leucorrhinia caudalis.
