Other Site Characteristics

Site includes part of the River Rauna valley and its tributary Klampupe River. River banks are characterized by calcareous and non-calcareous springs, dolomite outcrops and slope forests.

4.2 Quality and importance

Site of high importance for conservation of Fennoscandian mineral-rich springs and spring fens (7160) and Petrifying springs with tufa formation (7220*). The best site for springs with tufa formation in Latvia. Qualifying species are Lampetra planeri, Cottus gobio and Lutra lutra. Hosts a large number of nationally rare invertebrate species. Holds little importance for conservation of birds due to it's small area.
