Other Site Characteristics

Site includes a part of the Laugas Mire (raised bog) characterised by hummock-hollow complex, bog pools and dystrophic lakes (Visezers and Lodes lakes). Large areas with wet Rhynchosphora alba hollows in the central part. One of the few bogs in Latvia supporting both species with eastern distribution (Chamaedaphne calyculata) and western distribution (Trichophorum cespitosum).

4.2 Quality and importance

Qualifying features are 7110* Active raised bogs, 7140 Transitional mires and quaking bogs, 91D0* Bog woodland and 3160 Natural dystrophic lakes. Typical and rich raised bog bird community. One of few sites in Latvia with breeding L. limosa on bogs, and L. excubitor. Bog contains breeding gulls and ducks as well. Despite the quite extensive peat extraction in the W part of the mire (outside the site), it still comprises relatively undisturbed mire habitats, especially in the central part.
