Other Site Characteristics

This site is special while more than 99,5 % of the site covers habitats of the Europe importance. The area is formed on open sand dunes near the town of Pvilosta used as a place for algae drying (algae were used for making agar and fertilizing poor sandy soils) and grazing last 100 years. That is the reason while the grey dunes are still open.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is very important for protection of wide, still open grey dune habitat complex in scale of the Baltic region. Different plant societies of grey dunes occur there as a mosaic. Some biologically old pines Pinus sylvestris grow in patches. Also in this place there are pines partly covered by sand as a result of former (lat two hundred years) storms and heavy winds. The habitats of grey dunes are closely connected with plant, invertebrate and bird societies.Unfortunately there is lack of regular disturbance important to maintenance of open dune habitats. During last twenty years open dune areas are occupied by pines Pinus sylvestris. Natural succession is going on. In this case disturbances must be carried out to maintain the quality of the site. There are important population of Koeleria glauca, Corynephorus canescens, Festuca sabulosa and also Epipactis atrorubens.
