Other Site Characteristics

Fen area, for large part excavated. Site is adjacent to NL2003064 Wieden.

4.2 Quality and importance

Together with the Wieden the site forms the biggest low-lying peat bog complex in north-western Europe. One of the five most important sites for the habitat type Molinia meadows on calcareous, peaty or clayey-silt-laden soils (6410). One of the three most important sites for the habitat type Transition mires and quaking bogs (7140, subtype Caricion davallianae). One of the ten most important sites for the habitat type Calcareous fens with Cladium mariscus (7210). The stronghold of the endemic subspecies Lycaena dispar batava in the Netherlands. One of the two known sites of Graphoderus biliniatus in the Netherlands. One of the five most important sites for the orchid Liparis loeselli. Important for breeding marsh birds. Includes new IBAs 053-00 and 054-00 (van den Tempel & Osieck, 1994). Important for invertebrates and plants.
