Other Site Characteristics

Part of border lakes between former coast and empoldered land. A complex of three freshwater lakes (with sluices in between), bounded in the north-west by the dykes of the polders Oostelijk and Zuidelijk Flevoland (reclaimed in 1957) and in the south-east by the mainland. It is connected to the lakes SPA Ketelmeer en Vossemeer (NL3009013) in the north and to lake Nijkerkernauw (connected to SPA Eemmeer & Gooimeer Zuidoever, NL9802035) in the south, and is also adjacent to SPA Arkemheen (NL9802062) in the south. There are extensive though narrow reedbeds along the mainland coast.

4.2 Quality and importance

The following data refer to the period 1993-1997 (data in paragraph 3.2a-b refer te period 1999-2003). For Veluwemeer: Species meeting the 1% threshold (non-breeding): Bewick`s Swan Cygnus bewickii (11,0%), Northern Pintail Anas acuta (1,0%), Common Pochard Aythya ferina (4,2%), Common Coot Fulica atra (1,4%). One of the five most important sites for (non-breeding): Bewick's Swan Cygnus bewickii. The site regularly supports more than 20,000 wintering waterbirds: average peak number 26,795 (1991/92-1995/96). For Drontermeer: Species meeting the 1% threshold (non-breeding): Bewick`s Swan Cygnus bewickii (2,1%). For Wolderwijd en Nuldernauw: Species meeting the 1% threshold (non-breeding): Bewick`s Swan Cygnus bewickii (1,6%), Common Pochard Aythya ferina (2,1%). This site is a roost for large numbers of Cygnus columbianus and geese Anser from surrounding feeding areas, but count data are not available. Site coincides with IBA041 (IBA2000) and largely overlaps with IBA042 (IBA2000).Very important site for hard oligo-mesotrophic waters with bentic vegetation of Chara spp. Most extensive areas of The Netherlands and probably of the Atlantic biogeographic region (covering virtually the entire site, thus over 1500 hectares)
