Other Site Characteristics

An extensive area of shallow lakes, pools, reedbeds, Salix woodland and grassland which has developed on a polder (Zuidelijk Flevoland, reclaimed in 1968), having been spared from cultivation. It is situated xxx between the cities of Lelystad and Almere, along the west dyke of the polder where it adjoins SPA Markermeer & IJmeer (NL9803029).

4.2 Quality and importance

The following data refer to the period 1993-1997 (data in paragraph 3.2a-b refer te period 1999-2003). Major site for marshland birds and migratory waterfowl. The site is the main roost for geese Anser from feeding areas in xxx Flevoland, and is the most important moulting area for Anser anser xxx in north-west Europe. xxx Species meeting the 1% threshold (breeding): Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo (8%); Great Bittern Botaurus stellaris (1%); Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia (18%); (non-breeding): Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo (2%); Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia (14%); Greylag Goose Anser anser (8%); Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis (2%); Gadwall Anas strepera (5%); Common Teal Anas crecca (2%); Northern Pintail Anas acuta (1%); Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata (10%); Common Pochard Aythya ferina (2%); Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula (2%); Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta (3%). xxx One of the five most important sites for (breeding): Great Bittern Botaurus stellaris, Great Egret Egretta alba, Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia, Western Marsh-Harrier Circus aeruginosus, Northern Harrier Circus cyaneus, Spotted Crake Porzana porzana, Bluethroat Luscinia svecica; (non-breeding): Great Egret Egretta alba, Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia, Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus, Avocet Recuvirostra avocetta.The site regularly supports more than 20,000 wintering waterbirds: Greylag Goose up to 62,000 birds. xxx Site largely overlaps with IBA 066 (IBA2000)
