Other Site Characteristics
Sítio com uma estrutura linear, dominado pelo rio Minho. Este é um dos rios em Portugal menos intervencionados por grandes empreendimentos hidráulicos, ainda que seja afectado por variações de caudal, devidas a descargas de barragens localizadas a montante.
Ao longo do vale predomina a agricultura de regadio, em pequenas parcelas, intercalada por usos florestais dispersos, comocorrências significativas de sebes, matas e matos, originando um mosaico diversificado. Os povoados acompanham o vale, ocorrendo alguns centros urbanos de maiores dimensões, correspondentes às sedes de concelho. |
4.2 Quality and importance
Rio muito importante para a conservação de espécies piscícolas migradoras. A bacia hidrográfica deste rio é uma das duas no país onde o salmão (Salmo salar) ainda ocorre, representando a maior sub-população desta espécie, embora o número de indivíduos seja extremamente baixo. De salientar ainda a ocorrência de sável (Alosa alosa), savelha (Alosa fallax), lampreia-marinha (Petromyzon marinus) e panjorca (Rutilus arcasii). Importante também para algumas espécies de mamíferos associados ao meio aquático e vegetação ribeirinha, como a lontra (Lutra lutra) e a toupeira-de-água (Galemys pyrenaicus). Embora a presença desta última não esteja confirmada para o próprio rio Minho, está confirmada em vários afluentes importantes, o que indicia a importância deste sítio como habitat potencial e corredor ecológico para esta espécie.
O Sítio reúne um conjunto de habitats húmidos de elevada importância ecológica, incluindo matas ripícolas dominadas por Alnus glutinosa e Salix spp. (91E0*), comunidades permanentes de leitos de cheia rochosos (6160), juncais e sapais, destacando-se um extenso complexo sapal-juncal junto à foz do rio Coura (1320, 1330), e uma zona estuarina (1130) de cariz atlântico. |
