Other Site Characteristics

A Serra da Gardunha localiza-se na zona ocidental do Sistema Montanhoso Central Ibérico (Beira Baixa) dividindo a “Campina de Castelo Branco” da Cova da Beira. A paisagem da Serra da Gardunha, com afloramentos e cristas de xisto e granito, possui uma forte componente de intervenção humana com uma matriz de áreas agrícolas, com especial destaque para os cerejais, e florestais de resinosas, conservando no entanto áreas ocupadas por formações naturais e semi-naturais detentoras de uma significativa e valiosa diversidade biológica.

4.2 Quality and importance

A vertente Norte da Serra é caracterizada pela presença de habitats bem conservados de castinçais (Castanea sativa) (9260), explorados em regime de talhadia (corte de varas), e carvalhais de carvalho-roble ou alvarinho (Quercus robur) e carvalho-negral ou carvalho-pardo-das-beiras (Quercus pyrenaica) (9230), aos quais surge associada a abrótea (Asphodelus bento-rainhae), endemismo lusitano exclusivo deste sistema montanhoso. Na vertente Sul ocorre uma grande variedade de matos, entre os quais urzais e urzais-estevais mediterrânicos não litorais (4030) e comunidades de montanha de caldoneira (Echinospartum ibericum) (4090), um endemismo ibérico.
