Other Site Characteristics

O Sítio assume um formato linear, sendo a estrutura dominante o rio Paiva. Este curso de água de média dimensão percorre um planalto no seu troço inicial, área onde predominam os matos, campos agrícolas, prados e alguns carvalhais, apresentando a vegetação um carácter continental. No seu troço médio segue em vale encaixado, cujas encostas são revestidas por manchas plantadas de pinheiro e eucalipto, por matos e ainda por pequenas manchas de carvalhais e sobreirais. Em parte deste troço, a orientação do rio, as vertentes de declive elevado e a predominância de substrato xistoso determinam a existência de vegetação de carácter termo-mediterrânico. Nas margens as zonas rochosas de afloramentos e bancos de pedras alternam com zonas de terra, onde a vegetação ripícola se encontra bem conservada e desenvolvida. Na sua parte final, apesar do aumento da área plantada com eucaliptos, as vertentes evidenciam elevada cobertura e boa densidade vegetal, denunciando já um carácter atlântico. Assinala-se a ocorrência do endemismo lusitano Anarrhinum longipedicellatum.

4.2 Quality and importance

De uma forma geral o Sítio apresenta uma vegetação ripícola relativamente bem conservada, com bosques de amieiros (Alnus glutinosa) formando galeria (91E0*), frequentemente bordejada por manchas com alguma expressão de carvalhais de (Quercus robur) (9230) fragmentários e ainda de sobreiral (9330). Em termos de qualidade da água, o rio Paiva é considerado um dos melhores da Europa, assumindo bastante importância para a conservação da fauna aquática e ribeirinha, sendo de destacar a toupeira-de-água (Galemys pyrenaicus), a lontra(Lutra lutra) e o lagarto-de-água (Lacerta schreiberi). É também importante para algumas espécies piscícolas endémicas, e para uma das raras populações de mexilhão-de-rio (Margaritifera margaritifera) que tinha sido considerada extinta. Para o lobo (Canis lupus) constitui uma importante zona de passagem/ ligação entre as Serras de Montemuro, Freita/ Arada e Lapa/ Leomil.
