Other Site Characteristics

Floresta de características higrófilas, subtropical húmida, constituída por espécies arbóreas e arbustivas perenifólias e um estrato mais baixo rico em fetos, musgos, hepáticas e outras plantas de pequeno porte, algumas das quais endémicas. No seu interior, húmido e sombrio, coabitam numerosas espécies de fauna e flora de elevado interesse.

4.2 Quality and importance

Trata-se de uma floresta outrora existente também na Europa e hoje confinada a algumas ilhas do Atlântico, com características peculiares, com elevado número de endemismos. Ao nível dos vertebrados destaca-se o único endemismo terrestre o Pombo trocaz Columba trocaz . A ilha da Madeira possuidora da maior e mais bem conservada área de Laurissilva.

Está em curso nesta área o projeto LIFE FURA-BARDOS - Conservação do Fura-bardos e habitat de Laurissilva, na Ilha da Madeira, cujo objetivo visa contribuir para a conservação do fura-bardos e do habitat de Laurissilva na ilha da Madeira através da identificação de áreas de nidificação do fura-bardo na Madeira e conhecer a sua tendência populacional, recuperação de 64, 6 ha de floresta Laurissilva através da remoção de plantas invasoras e a reflorestação de 20 ha de Laurissilva ardida.
