O sítio é constituído pelos 6 ilhéus do Porto Santo (Ilhéu da Cal ou de Baixo, Ilhéu de Ferro, Ilhéu da Fonte da Areia, Ilhéu de Fora, Ilhéu das Cenouras e Ilhéu de Cima). Locais de natureza vulcânica e de relevo acentuado, fortemente batidospelo mar.

6.3 Conservation measures (optional)

O sítio é permanentemente monitorizado e controlado por vigilantes da natureza sediados na estação da Rede de Áreas Marinhas Protegidas do Porto Santo. Está em fase de conclusão, nesta área, o projeto LIFE09 NAT/PT/000041 LIFE Ilhéus do Porto Santo, cujo objetivo de longo prazo é conseguir que os ecossistemas deste sítio, bem como a sua área marinha circundante, atinjam um estado de conservação estável, favorável e autossustentado. Neste projeto foram desenvolvidas diversas ações nas quais se realizou estudos da biologia, etologia, área de distribuição e medidas de conservação das espécies prioritárias, e se eliminou e reduziu os efetivos de animais e plantas com impacto negativo sobre as espécies endémicas (flora exótica, murganhos e coelhos).
