Zona húmida integrada no sistema do Baixo Mondego e que, em conjunto com outros pauis, constitui um grupo de áreas importantes para a conservação da natureza numa zona de grande intensificação agrícola.

4.2 Quality and importance

O paul possui grande valor durante a migração outonal de passeriformes, destacando-se a felosa-dos-juncos (Acrocephalus schoenobanus), a felosa-poliglota (Hippolais polyglotta) e a felosa-musical (Phylloscopus trochilus). A nível nacional, destaca-se a sua importância como local de refúgio para anatídeos invernantes, assim como local de reprodução para aves de caniçal, nomeadamente garça-pequena (Ixobrhychus minutus), rouxinol-grande-dos-caniços (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) e felosa-unicolor (Locustella luscinioides).
