Other Site Characteristics
Extensa área marinha que inclui o arquipélago das Berlengas, um conjunto de ilhas composto pela Berlenga e Estelas, massas de granito-róseo e pelos Farilhões, constituídos por xistos gnaisses e micaxistos, localizadas a cerca de 5.6 mn da costa, a noroeste de Peniche, que são parte de uma antiga zona continental, hoje submersa.
A área marinha inclui uma das zonas mais ricas da plataforma continental portuguesa, com elevados índices de produtividade biológica, em grande parte alimentados por correntes complexas que geram turbilhões de sedimentos e provocam o afloramento superficial de águas profundas. A riqueza biológica destas águas nota-se na diversidade de espécies influenciada pela mistura de águas pelágicas e litorais e pela convergência das condições Atlânticas nas zonas mais expostas, com as Mediterrânicas nos locais mais abrigados. |
4.2 Quality and importance
Constitui um local de reprodução importante no contexto europeu ou regional, nomeadamente para airo (Uria aalge), cagarra (Calonectris diomedea) e roquinho (Oceanodroma castro).
Na ilha Berlenga existe uma das únicas colónias de airo no litoral ibérico e, nos ilhéus Farilhões, nidifica a única população continental de roquinho e cagarra, sendo que esta última também nidifica na ilha Berlenga. Este arquipélago constitui o limite norte da distribuição destas duas últimas espécies e o limite sul do airo. Nidificam ainda aqui outras espécies de aves marinhas como a galheta (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) e a gaivota-de-patas-amarelas (Larus michahelis) e pontualmente a gaivota-dasa-escura (Larus fuscus) além de diversas espécies terrestres, e durante os períodos de migração surgem diversas espécies migradoras. A área marinha próxima das ilhas é conhecida como zona de alimentação do airo e da galheta e toda a extensão marinha apresenta grande densidade de cagarra, abrangendo as áreas mais importantes para alimentação e repouso dos indivíduos da colónia. |
