Solos de natureza vulcânica, tendo o basalto como rocha predominante. Topografia acidentada de grandes declives. Sujeita a nevões durante alguns dias do ano. Abarca a origem das principais linhas de água da zona Este da ilha da Madeira. Sítiode grande beleza paisagística.

4.2 Quality and importance

O Sítio abrange todos os locais conhecidos de nidificação da Freira da Madeira, ave endémica da ilha da Madeira e uma das mais raras aves marinhas do mundo, sendo considerada extremamente ameaçada.

6.3 Conservation measures (optional)

Está em curso nesta área o projeto LIFE11 NAT/PT/000327 LIFE MACIÇO MONTAHOSO – Recuperação de espécies do Maciço Montanhoso Central da Madeira. Projeto este que surgiu depois do grande incendio que ocorreu nesta área em agosto de 2010, tendo como objetivo geral a conservação dos recursos naturais frágeis do Maciço Montanhoso Oriental da Ilha da Madeira (MMO). Neste projeto estão a decorrer ações de atualização da cartografia dos habitats e espécies prioritárias, criação de cartografia de espécies invasoras, potenciar o estabelecimento e a expansão dos habitats prioritários “Charnecas macaronésicas” (4050), Florestas endémicas de Juniperus spp. (9560) e Florestas mediterrânicas de Taxus baccata (9580) em áreas selecionadas no MMO, através da regeneração de áreas dominadas por espécies invasoras, reintrodução e/ou reforço de populações das espécie vegetais e animais alvo, negativamente afetadas pelo incêndio.
