Área bastante heterogénea, com áreas abertas, de agricultura cerealífera extensiva, montados de sobro e azinho, afloramentos rochosos e escarpas fluviais.

Área muito importante para numerosas aves dependentes dos agrossistemas ibéricos de feição estepária e também por diversas aves de rapina. Uma das zonas mais importantes de invernada do grou Grus grus em Portugal.
