Other Site Characteristics

Râul se formeaza la contactul dintre masivul calcaros al Hamaului Mare (1793 m), cu cristalinul masivului ipotului (1366 m) , de la altitudine de 1280 m. La început, în Depresiunea Ciucului, e un râu linitit, urmând dupa aceea sa strabata zona defileului, în care sunt cantonate câteva staiuni balneoclimaterice valoroase ( Tunad, Bixad, Malna), ocolete apoi, pe trei pari, masivul Baraoltului, ratacind lene, cu bucle largi, prin esul plan al Depresiunii intercarpatice a Braovului, unde îi vin în sprjin: Râul Negru (L = 88 km, F = 2.349 km2), Ghimbaelul (L = 6 km, F = 8 km2), Bârsa (L = 73 km, F = 937 km2) etc. Un nou masiv îi iese în cale, acela al Peranilor, pe care-l strabate prin defileul de la Raco (12 Km lungime), mai puin impunator decât primul. În ara Oltului (depresiunea Fagaraului), râul capata iarai caracter de es, meandrând printre malurile joase, împins permanent spre dreapta de numeroi aflueni fagaraeni (aproximativ 20 mai importani) scuri, dar viguroi, revarsându-se frecvent în punctele de întâlnire cu Oltul. Cibinul (L = 82 km, F = 2.194 km2), Hârtibaciul (L = 110 km, F = 1.025 km2) i Sadu (L = 60 km, F = 278 km2), acesta de pe urma cu amenajari complexe, îi aduc ultimele cantitai de apa pe teritoriul Transilvaniei, caci, dupa unirea cu acesta, Oltul traverseaza Carpaii Meridionali, ajunge în pitorescul defileu Turnu Rou – Cozia, întrerupt doar de Depresiunea larga a Lovitei, în cuprinsul careia primete Lotrul, ale carui izvoare pornesc de sub masivul Parângului.;

Situl conine habitate încadrate în categoriile de bonitate optim i corespunzator, pentru castor. Deosebit de valoroase (calitativ i cantitativ) pentru aceasta specie sunt habitatele mlatinoase din sectorul Fagara-Porumbacu de Jos.;
