Other Site Characteristics
The site is an island in lake Mälaren. The bedrock is dominated by gneiss. Sandy till with coarse silt and a surface layer of wave-washed till is the dominating soil type on this site. Flat rocks are common along the shoreline. The northern part of the island is characterized by clay soils. Coniferous forest characterizes the vegetation. Although cattle has been grazing on the island and a small part of the northern point has been cultivated, the forest can be considered as primeval. Logs, trunks and up to 500 years old trees are not uncommon in this area. |
4.2 Quality and importance
Although cattle has been grazing on the island and a small part of the northern point has been cultivated, the forest can be considered as primeval. Logs, trunks and up to 500 years old trees are not uncommon in this area. The cryptogam flora and the invertebrate fauna on the island is exceptionally rich. One of the fungi species on dead wood that have been identified on the island are not found anywhere else in Europe. One of the reasons to include the species listed in section 3.3 with motivation D is that they are considered to be keyspecies when identifying sites of conservation interest. |
