Other Site Characteristics
The site is an island with a history as a sparsely forested pasture, dominated by oak. Soils inthe south are dominated by sandy till and varved clay. In the north thereare more conifers, especially on rocky peninsulas. Parts of the surroundingwaters are shallow, with sandy sediments. There is a small, rather young, lake in the north part of the island surrounded by peaty soils. In thenorthwest you find a small shallow lagoon (gloe) with sandy bottom, isolatedfrom sea by reeds. |
4.2 Quality and importance
The southern part of the island is grazed, but too extensive to keep spruce out of the site. The forest is currently a little bit too dense to benefit the rare lichens, fungi and insects that live in very old oak-trees in light but sheltered situations. At present these very old trees are few on the island. With proper management the site will however be very valuable in about 50 years, when many trees will reach ages of 250 years and more. |
