Other Site Characteristics

Sättra ängar is situated in the area that lies between the modern open farming land, where open fields dominate, and the southern wooded part of Östergötland. The area is called the transitional district and consist of a mosaic of open fields, pastures and forests, mostly deciduous. The area is lightly hilly. Sättra Ängar is one of the most beautiful spots for a visit to the countryside of Östergötland. The lush meadow is a remnant from the days of traditional agriculture when for centuries farmers made hay for their cattle. Traditionally built wooden fences reinforce the ancient characteristics. The profusion of flowers on the meadow has few parallels in the Swedish countryside. What was once a place of hard labour has today got something of a divine glow surrounding it, which is easy to understand for those who have visited the meadow during early summer.Annual haymaking and the lack of fertilizer are the prerequisites for biological diversity of meadows. As agriculture has become modernised meadows have nearly disappeared. Several of the vascular plants, insects and fungi have therefore become rare. However, at Sättra the profusion of flowers remains!"

4.2 Quality and importance

Sättra ängar is a very important nature reserve where a piece of oldfashioned farming land, a hay meadow, is saved. The flora of the reserve is very rich and the site is a very important site for the plant Euphrasia rostkoviana ssp fennica. There are both high botanical and cultural values in the area.
