Other Site Characteristics

Fågelmossen is situated in the northern part of Östergötland. The surrounding landscape is dominated by coniferous forest and bogs. The landscape is characterized by many big and small crevices in the bedrock. Most of the forest in the neighbourhood is managed for forestry. The bedrock in the reserve of Fågelmossen consist of granite and the loose sediments consist of sandy moraine and peat in the bogs. The bedrock is seen in several places in the reserve. In the lower parts of the reserve the bogs are situated. The bog in the north is open, without higher vegetation in the middle while the southern smaller bog holds small Pinus sylvestris etc. The forest in the reserve is old and some dead wood are found. The birdlife is characteristic for this kind of habitat with for example Tetrao urogallus and Tetrao tetrix tetrix.Fågelmossen was protected against forestry management for the first time 1937 by Kungliga Domänstyrelsen. 1984 the area was expanded to the area it includes today. In the near future the domaine reserve are going to be a nature reserve by a decision from the County Administration Board.
