Other Site Characteristics

Narbäck is situated in connection with the big lake Vättern in the southwestern part of the county of Östergötland. Narbäck is one part of a larger area with ravine forest along the eastern side of the lake Vättern. Narbäck includes a ravine with a small stream and wet areas in the westslope down to Vättern. In the forest there are growing Fraxinus excelsior and Alnus glutinosa and also some Populus tremula, Ulmus glabra, Betula sp, Quercus robur and Acer platanoides. In rocky areas Tilia cordata are found. The flora of the area is very rich with a lot of rare plants such as Allium ursinum which has a large population here. In the wet areas Carex remota is found. In connection with the stream an interesting flora of mosses is growing. Matteuccia struthiopteris is also growing here. In the higher situated areas of the site an interesting flora of species prefering dry conditions are found. The geology of the area where Narbäck is one part is interesting.Narbäck is situated at the slope of the fault that caused the rift-valley where the lake Vättern is situated.

4.2 Quality and importance

Narbäck is a very valueable part of the eastern slope down to the lake Vättern. The site consist of ravine forest with very high biological values and has few correspondences in the county of Östergötland outside the area close to Vättern.
