Other Site Characteristics
Bertilsbo is situated in the southern part of Östergötland close to the town Åtvidaberg. In the surroundings there are relatively large amount of different kinds of deciduous wood. The bedrock in the site consist of granite and the soil of moraine.Bertilsbo is a mixed deciduous wood with a characteristic of virgin forest with old trees and large, dead on the ground lying trees. The dominating trees in the site are Populus tremula, Quercus robur, Alnus glutinosa and Betula verrucosa. There are also shadowed rocksurfaces with a lot of rare and unusual mosses and lichens for example Homalia trichomanoides, Porella platyphylla and Anomodon spp. A small stream passes through the site and gives humidity to the close surrounding which makes the circumstances good for several of the species in the site. The flora on the ground includes several pronounced groveplants as Lathyrus vernus, Viola mirabilis and Actea spicata. The birdlife is expected to be rich in the wood although no investigation of it has been done. |
4.2 Quality and importance
Bertilsbo is a very valueable site with the character of virgin forest with a lot of large, dead wood and rock surfaces with a rich flora. The site is important as well for the flora as for the insects and birds. This kind of site is unusual today when the forestry affects most of the wood. Recently a track for runners and skiers have been made through the site, which has affected the wood negatively but the importance of the site still remain. |
